AI powered diagnostic tool for obstructive sleep apnea
As part of the Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) programme, STFC Hartree Centre are working with Apnea-Tech to improve diagnostic tools for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
OSA is a chronic condition characterised by frequent upper airway collapse during sleep, leading to co-morbidities such as systemic hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke. With an estimated 1 billion sufferers worldwide and 80% undiagnosed, a simple, low-cost solution is critical to free up sleep clinic capacity and address this looming health crisis.
Apnea-Tech Limited is a digital health SME that has developed a sleep apnoea screening device which directly monitors the entire breath pathway. It has demonstrated to identify both apnoea (breathing cessation) and hypopnea (reduction in respiration).
By working with the Hartree Centre, the company aims to enhance the device into a comprehensive AI-driven diagnostic tool, which will identify oxygen saturation levels and support full clinical diagnoses.
“This is a great opportunity and a major milestone in further developing our MHRA registered and UKCA approved screening device into a full diagnostic for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.”
